Kottayam - The Bungalow

The Bungalow

What's this?

About 100 kms from Kochi and 75 kms from Thekaddy by road, 'The Bungalow' is located on a hillock of Anchiluppa of Kanjirappally. The home was built way back in 1927 by Mr. K.V.Varkey, Karickattuparampil as his family residence. It has now been renovated and modified into a beautiful traditional Kerala-style bungalow. George Abraham, the proprietor of the house stays in the bungalow with his wife Susan along with other members of the family including his mother, brother and sisters. This is a family which eats together, prays together and stays together; it's interesting how every member of the joint family has a story to tell of their own. George will be ever willing to take you around 20 acres of rubber plantation around the house, and share information on cultivation of local spices, fruits, and farming in the area. If interested, one can even get up early morning to witness how rubber tappers tap the tree producing latex
The architecture of the building is a mix of early Syrian Christian home architecture with the traditional spacious Keralite style of numerous cross ventilated doors and windows. The roof of the house is steeply sloping and red-tiled which is supported by wooden pillars. The rooms are traditionally built but luxuriously furbished with modern and well equipped bathrooms attached to them. The bungalow has not one but many interesting spots as options to relax. The guests can have a dip in the swimming pool, built in ancient style with a 'Kulippura' (bathing ghat), read a book in the open courtyard or simply sit in the verandah while sipping 'Tender Coconut' which is specialty drink of the area.
Kottayam is known for Lakes, Latex and Lettters and most of Latex is produced in and around Kanjirappaly. To explore it more, guest can visit a nearby temple or church which is more than 600 years old or even visit a small village and get to know the lifestyle of people there. The Bungalow homestay lets you refresh your senses via innumerable smells and colorful sights. Become a part of it and experience the stay you will never forget.
