Named after its signature symbol, Taamara (the lotus) is this mesmerizing homestay in Alleppey. As you drive into the home’s premises you’re welcomed by a lotus pond in full bloom and its smiling owners, waiting with a pink lotus to gift you. Taamara is the 100 year old home of Mr. V. V. Babu, an award-winning filmmaker and his gracious wife, Nirmala. The one-acre property was recently renovated and shares the tranquil yet cheery persona of Mrs. Nirmala, who started this venture three years ago. The home’s idyllic location and unbelievable ambience can only be described with one word, perfection. Taamara’s refreshing ambience is enhanced by the fact that only a fraction of the property is covered. Most of the home flaunts lush green landscapes, vivacious flower-bearing plants and bright sunlight. As seen by the spacious and partially open kitchen, you’ll find that the presence of walls is rare and minimal. The home has two uber-chic cottages that are perched upon the Vembanad Lake and share a dazzling deck. At Taamara, whether you’re relaxing in your room, reading on the balcony or dinning on the deck, the lake is always in sight. And even under your feet. These cottages have an air of exclusivity but are warm and soothing at the same time. Every inch of the area has been done with an impeccable eye for detail. From the rooms to the bathrooms, it all seems to belong in a glossy lifestyle magazine. Sitting on the deck, you can see fishermen caste their nets at dusk and return at the crack of dawn to collect their catch. As you feast on Mrs. Nirmala’s homemade delicacies, you might also see beautiful birds swoop down to feast on their lunch as well. Fishing is popular amongst guests. And the family likes to serve their guest’s catches for a dinner that’s spent exchanging stories. Since Alleppey faces the East you’ll wake up to a picturesque sunrise that fills your room with a pink and orange glow. The home lends a beautiful view of Kumarakom, which in the evening turns into a hypnotic light show. A cheerful day chasing Roger, the family’s pet rabbit, is a favourite amongst children, no matter what their age.
