Set in an exotic lush green surrounding of a snaking tributary of the Pampa River, Parnasaala definitely lives upto its Sanskitised name, ‘Abode of leaves’. The hundred and twenty year’s old house is elusively tucked away with acres of the Kuttanad paddy fields (famous for rice cultivation upto 8 feet under sea level) and the Pampa waters on the other. One has to inch their way below the rustic Nedumuby Bridge and traverse through a shadowy canal in the local narrow ‘vallams’ (boats) to reach the destination. A 700 years old temple across a tranquil pond is the first sight of the house, when one walks into the scenic pathway leading upto the house.
Each corner of the ancient house is meticulously preserved by Mr. Madhu Mohan and his family. With an age old history of agriculture, it is but natural that the house is built on a 10 acre land, abundant with not only trees, fruits, birds but also a paddy field at the back. Rooms are built around a typical ancient architectural feature of Kerala; a sprawling courtyard. The two rooms for guests are spacious and clean with open baths attached for an exotic experience. It is a pleasant respite to be limitedly connected to the outer world as there is no internet connection in the area.
A trained classical music singer, the host is also a passionate wood carver. His house is brimming with extraordinary artifacts, a bird house and musical instruments made by him. Authentic South Indian meals prepared by the grandmother of the house are exemplary. With a profound artistic background, Mr. Madhu Mohan provides a perfect introduction to Indian art and culture to those who are new.
