Nestled away in the south-western corner of Karnataka lies what's dubbed 'The Scotland of the East- Coorg.
The hill station of Coorg produces some of the best coffee in the world. The introduction of coffee by the British in the 19th century was the most important phenomenon that changed the ethos of Coorg and its inhabitants.
Mercara or Madikeri, a charming town situated 1170 meters above sea level is the nerve centre of Coorg. In the centre of the town stands the 17th century Madikeri Fort that was once the scene of many a fierce battle. Overlooking a deep valley here is Raja's Seat- lovers of nature can sit and enjoy the spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset as the king and his consorts did in the past.
The Abbey Falls where water hurls down to a depth of 70 feet into a rocky valley has to be really seen to fathom its utter beauty. For those who have a head for heights, Tadiyendamol; the loftiest peak in Coorg stands patiently, waiting to be climbed. Located on the banks of the river Cauvery is the Valnoor Fishing Camp where avid fishing enthusiasts can indulge in the luxury of angling for the huge game fish mahseer.
The Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe that houses over 5000 monks happens to be one of the largest settlements of Tibetans in the country. The famous Golden Temple is situated within its precincts. Every day, the Namdroling monastery welcomes hundreds of visitors from across the globe to experience the serenity of the place.
Coorg is home to the robust, martial race of the Kodavas. Legend has it that during Alexander the Great's invasion in 327 BC, many of his soldiers married natives from Coorg and settled down here. The Kodavas have their own distinct culture and traditions that they have zealously guarded over the ages- to this day, all Kodavas retain the privilege of carrying firearms without a license. The Kodavas are as renowned hosts, as they were warriors.
That's Coorg for you. Undeniably, it is a world apart. And, it hasn't changed much since Dervla Murphy wrote her bestseller On a shoestring to Coorg in the 1970's.
