HOMESTAY DETAILS

To Jobin and his family, Akkarakalam Memoirs is not only a family relic, but an opportunity to keep alive the grandeur and tradition of his Syrian Christian roots. This archaic structure stands majestically by the Pampa River on the Alappuzha – Changnacherry road. The 150 year old house has history embedded in every wooden wall and brick laid years ago. The house emanates a vibe which demands a sense of reverence and admiration. The family’s association with the illustrious Snake Boat Race is equally exciting to learn about.

Ideal to plunge into a historic as well as authentic Kerala experience, the home stay offers a variegated experience to all. Locked between the plush paddy fields and the magnificent Pampa River, the house is a colossal structure built on 10 acre luscious green land. Jobin reminisces fondly about the house as he indulgently narrates the history behind the family portrait, the rice cellar called ‘Ara’, the coconut storage room now converted into a luxurious cottage, old artifacts and even about the old black porcelain switches. The red oxide floor and archaic furniture emit an aged exclusivity. Only some parts like the open roofed baths have been renovated carefully for practicality and comfort.

With a strong hospitality background, Jobin and his wife are exemplary hosts keeping in mind the heterogeneity of the taste buds’ of the their guests. Though they love to see guests enjoy an authentic Kerala meal on the banana leaf, one can get a variety of other food as well.
