Idyllically situated on the banks of the holy River Pampa in the village of Champakulam 14km southeast of Alleppey, Kaits Home is a serene and traditional Homestay right in the midst of the backwaters. The delightful and attentive Mr. Jossey Thomas lives with his wife, mother and two small children in the main house which is a farmhouse of typical Keralan architecture. The family is Christian and their heritage in the area stretches back over 557 years; they are involved in the Champakulam snake boat race every August which starts outside their house.
Guests stay in cottages with verandas by the river where they can sit in swing-chairs or lie in the waterside hammocks, observing the scenic beauty, birdlife and every day lives of the local people by the river. The pagoda jutting out onto the water is an ideal place to enjoy a typically Keralan meal home cooked by the family, featuring a range of curries, yoghurt dishes, Indian breads and rice.
A trip on the country boat around the hushed canals is a must, as is the unusual activity of “night fishing” with a spear or bow and arrow. Mr. Jossey can take you on a fascinating walk round the local villages, paddy fields and bird sanctuary, pointing out plant and wildlife. Champakulam itself is a popular stop off for houseboats due to its village market, its many temples, and the fascinatingly decorated 16th century Portuguese church. Moreover, it also boasts the display of the famous winning “Champakulam snake boat”. Backwater tours can be arranged to pick guests up right outside their rooms, avoiding the hub of Alleppey town and getting a sense of village life via narrow canals and between paddy fields.
