Hoshiarpur district is located in the north-east part of the state of Punjab. It falls in the Jalandhar Doaba region of the State. "Doaba" literally means "land of two rivers" ("Do" two, "Ab" river; Punjabi), Beas and Sutlej. History marks it as the centre of the Green Revolution in India, it being one of the most fertile regions of the world. In fact, it remains one of the largest per capita producers of wheat in the world.
Covering an area of 3198.2 Sq. kms, the district is well connected by roads and railways. Being one of the oldest districts of Punjab, it has a long tradition of educational attainments. Hoshiarpur was home to part of the Punjab University for a short duration after partition until its relocation. People from this region are well educated and basically agriculturists by profession. The joint families residing in the district are well connected and get together for jovial celebrations during regional fairs and festivals. A large number of people from this region have settled abroad. Their remittances have in turn helped the area to prosper, making it arguably one of the most prosperous in Punjab.
One of the newest trends witnessed in the region is ‘village tourism’. The local people live a village life of simplicity, still practicing traditional ways of living. It is interesting for many to experience the rural life of Punjab.
