AGRA HOMESTAYS

Agra Homestay

With the world-renowned Taj Mahal as its calling card, Agra is perhaps the most famous city in India. But its legacy can be traced back to centuries before the 'symbol of love' captured the world's imagination. The city was immortalized in the epic Mahabharata as Agraban, a part of Lord Krishna's land. However, as a political and cultural capital it gained significance in the 16th century, under the Mughal dynasty.

Besides the Taj Mahal, the Mughals created innumerable other monuments such as the lesser-known Itmad-ud-dualah also called the Baby Taj. The spectacular white marble creation was commissioned by Queen Noor Jehan as a tribute to her Father. And is believed to have inspired the Taj Mahal.

Minutes away from the Taj is the sprawling and magnificent, Agra Fort. The fort, with its sixteen majestic palaces, served as a home to six Mughal Emperors. In this fortress-like palace, the unending sight of red sandstone is offset by the use of brilliant white marble. Besides its remarkable architecture, the fort also offers a breath-taking view of the Taj, sitting proudly and shining brightly under the sun. One can vividly envision Emperor Shah Jahan spending the last seven years of his life, looking at the final resting place of his wife, once he was placed under house arrest by his son.

A 45-kilometer drive from Agra takes you to Fatehpur Sikri. The city was the capital under Emperor Akbar, till 1585. After this year the capital was shifted to Agra and the royal family moved to the Agra Fort. Just like its counterpart in Agra, the Fort of Fatehpur Sikri is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous the Buland Darwaza (Grand Entrance) and the Tomb of Sufi Saint, Salim Chishti. Millions flock to this tomb every year. Because it is widely held that all your prayers are answered here. And in turn, you must one day return to the shrine to perform a small ritual. The prefect reason, if ever one was needed.
