Thekkady
LOCATION
The world's most fascinating wildlife sanctuary is located in Kerala. It is India's largest wildlife sanctuary.
HISTORY
The sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The manmade lake was created by a dam built in the region. The result of which are the tops of trees that magically seem to grow out of the deep lake. The sanctuary is now home to many wild animals like tigers, elephants, wild boars and many varieties of birds.
CUISINE
The local cuisine is dependant heavily on locally grown rice and freshly found sea food. Both fish curries and vegetarian dishes are served with a generous helping of pride and love. Dishes are usually cooked with coconut and coconut milk. But food from all over the world can be found in the high end hotels of Thekkady.
LANGUAGE
The native language is Malyalam. But as this is the Indian state with the highest rate of literacy, English is widely spoken, more so than even Hindi.The languages spoken commonly are Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and English.
ATTRACTIONS
Thekkady is famous for the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places for viewing elephants and other wild animals. Thekkady offers facilities for Trekking, elephant riding and boating. Boating through the Placid Lake provides a rare opportunity to watch wild animals at close quarters. Camping is allowed inside the sanctuary with prior permission. Rides on bamboo rafts are a lovely experience.
