Jodhpur
LOCATION
Jodhpur is located in the heart of the royal state of Rajasthan. Important distances are Ajmer - 200 km, Udaipur - 266 km, Jaisalmer - 290 km and Agra - 577 km.
HISTORY
Jodhpur is the second largest in Rajasthan and was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore Rajput clan. The Old City is surrounded by 9.5km long wall with 7 gates and is small enough to walk around, its winding streets preserving intriguing bazaars and ancient colourful houses. Tribal people from the surrounding areas are seen in the traditional azures, greens and saffrons of traditional Rajasthani attire.
CUISINE
Due to Jodhpur's arid climate the food is usually laced with a lot of butter and ghee. Cold beverages are integral to staying hydrated. The area around the Sojati Gate and the Sardar Market at the Clock tower, which is famous for shopping, is also the place where one can enjoy the famous makhania lassi and then explore the spice and vegetable markets. Pyaaz kachori and dal-baati-choorma are the state's specialties.
LANGUAGE
The native language is Rajasthani which is very similar to Hindi. But it's easy to find people who speak English well.
ATTRACTIONS
Jodhpur, also known as the Blue City, is famous for many forts and palaces. The most important amongst them are the 17th century Meherangargh fort, the Taleti Mahal and the 20th century Umaid Bhawan. The Umaid bhawan is the home of the city's royalty but also serves as a museum and hotel. The most beautiful temple in the area is the Osiyan temple. This divine Jain temple is located 60 kms from Jodhpur. In December, the city is filled by with who's who of India's glamour world. They gather here for the city's famous Polo season. For shopping the ideal places are the areas area around the Sojati Gate and the Sardar Market at the Clock tower.
