Hoshiarpur

HISTORY
Punjab is the most zestful part of the country and a vibrant but lesser known part of the state is Hoshiarpur. This district is a valuable resource for the country's agricultural needs and has many small to medium size industries catering to woodwork, ivory work and such. The most glorious part of Hoshiarpur's history has recently been uncovered by excavations, which proved that Hoshiarpur was a part of the great Indus Valley civilization. Hoshiarpur is famous for its fruit gardens and wooden toys as well as inlay work of hathi dant (ivory). Archaeology Museum, Sadhu Ashram and Dholbaha are places worth seeing in a radius of 25 Kms.
LOCATION
Hoshiarpur is located in Punjab's north-east and is about 390 kms from Delhi.

CUISINE
Punjab is an agriculturally rich state, which prides itself on its fresh and rich food. This is particularly true of the state's hinterland. Here, feasts are a part of every celebration and “makke ki roti and sarso ka saag” is the signature dish of the state. No meal is complete without a giant glass of chilled lassi. Ghee and gur (jaggery) are generously added to every meal.

LANGUAGE
While people in bigger cities of Punjab like Chandigarh and Amritsar might be well versed in English, this is not really the case in Hoshiarpur. This is a small district where the main language is Punjabi, which is very similar to hindi. While the general public might not be fluent in English, homestay owners have no trouble in communicating with people from different parts of the world.

ATTRACTIONS
Hoshiarpur is filled with important temples, gurudwaras as well as historical landmarks. Some of the most important attractions in and around the district are the Sheesh Mahal, Dera of Baba Charan Shah, Bajwara, Bham, Dolbaha. The revered Golden Temple in Amritsar is about 120 kms from Hoshiarpur and ample time should be allotted if one is undertaking a day tour to it.
