LOCATION
Chandigarh is the capital of both Haryana and Punjab, and is located in north India.

HISTORY
Chandigarh was India's first planned city. Pierre Jeanneret, one of Chandigarh's planners asked for ashes to be immersed in Sukhna Lake. But Chandigarh boasts of a pre-historic past. 8000 years ago, the area was home to Harappans. After India's partition Punjab was split into two. In March 1948, the Government of Punjab approved using land at the foothills of the Shivaliks as the site for Chandigarh, Punjab's new capital. In 1966, Chandigarh was also declared as the capital for Haryana.

LANGUAGE
The local language is Punjabi. But Hindi and English are spoken here more frequently by people than other parts of Punjab.

CUISINE
The state's most famous dish is “makke ki roti and sarso ka saag” which is topped off with a giant glass of lassi. But one can find many international food chains in the city as well.

ATTRACTIONS
Punjab's most famous site is the Golden Temple, which is located in Amritsar. The site where the Jallianwallah Bagh massacre took place is a chilling place of great historical importance. The beating retreat ceremony held every evening at the Wagah Border. The show of strength is attended by hundreds of people every day.
